Air Conditioner Problem - 3rd Time Since July

34599 Views 58 Replies 27 Participants Last post by  Arturo
Taking Telluride in for the 3rd time since July for no freon. 1st time no leak found, said was low from factory. 2nd time said was small leak, kept for 2 weeks. Checked everywhere including where the system is connected under the SUV that people had reported leaks. It's been hot lately in South, so while at the beach discovered AC was again not working. Anyone have a similar issue and possible fix?

Same here!!! They are telling me it’s a damaged condenser from a rock and not covered under warranty. $1400 ! Have you got any more info?
Hey Joey,
Same issue here except I was quoted $1800. If you don't mind, what was your resolution?
Thanks,
So...I’m sitting at dealerships right now and they said the same thing about a rock and shattered condenser. Waiting on price now. They told me that I might want to contact my insurance. Seems odd that the same thing is being said to y’all.

has your issue been resolved???
I contacted Kia Consumer Affairs and they said it could take 2-3 days for them to let me know if there is any assistance in getting it repaired. I think I’m going to put the complaint I writing too. We should probably all do that, so they can’t act like they have never heard of this issue. My quote was $1305
My insurance is covering the repair, so I'm just on the hook for the deductible. The independent shop doing the work is charging $1071 as compared to almost $1800 quoted by the dealer so its worth getting additional quotes.

Since I had less than 6000 miles, I fear this will be a continuing issue...
Glad your insurance covered it. It looks like we have three damaged AC condensers in this thread. How many of you had been 4X4 ing?
Well, it seems Kia has an issue with AC condensing units being effected by phantom rocks. Kings Kia, when told the AC wasn't cooling immediately said, " if a stone damaged the condenser we won't warranty the repair.", No let's take a look and see if it leaked coolant, no let's make sure all connections are tight, no anything but $1200.00 to replace, and by the way call your insurance company. It appears by other posts that $1200 is a deal. I dont want a deal I want Kia to do what's right, repair and rectify the issue.
Only other problem I have is I haven't found dealer service to be user friendly. Mostly I find them arrogant, condescending, and uninformative. If it doesn't have an additional fee they don't want to fix it.

We have gone round and round trying to get Kia to reimburse us for the money we spent to fix the condenser. We contacted Kia Consumer Affairs and they told us just today after dealing with this for a month that they will not be doing anything to help us. Ridiculous! Kia needs to figure this out!!!

Has any one been able to gain traction with Kia regading this issue? I have found them to be smug, condescending and not sure what else I can say. They have a poorly designed compressor or compressor shield and after you pay to repair they won't guarantee it won't happen again. I am filing a complaint with my state office of consumer repairs and Kia of course. I'm also reaching out to accumulate as many of these as I can so please send any and all complaints my way. HEY!!!!! How are these breaking? Are the people writing on this forum with this issue going serious off roading? Bottomed out on a parking lot median? There is no mention in any of these posts about usage or causality.
This isn't a Kia problem, it is something that happens very infrequently and with almost every car maker out there. It's just being in the wrong place at the wrong time. Just google it and you will see people from different brands posting about it. It is damage from road debris, which should be covered by your insurance company.

Hi. I drive a lot. I know a lot of people who drive a lot. If this is a random issue it is extremely random and rare. I know nothing of a systematic failure of random AC units due to road debris.

I am a car guy and belong to 16 different car forums. I did a quick scan and I see nothing to cooperate your statement. Do you have some data to back up your weird assertion?
If random road debris can take out an entire A/C system then there is a problem either with the shielding or integrity of the part. I too am a car guy and have averaged over 40,000 mile a year driving many makes and models and never has this happened. And when the first words out of the service manager's mouth are" if a rock hit it we won't warranty it" then Kia knows its a problem and refuses to rectify the issue. Service technician didn't look at my Telluride to ascertain why A/C wouldn't cool, just blamed it on a rock. I am going to have to pay out of my pocket to repair this, but I have also filed a complaint with Kia and the Ohio attorney General's office Department of Consumer Affairs. It is going to take more complaints and filings before Kia does what is right and warranties this and figures out a fix to the problem.

By the way I do not off road this 8000 mile Kia Telluride it has only been on paved city and federal roads. Not bottomed out on any curbs or driven over any bumps, except speed bumps.

Thanks! It is important to move forward on issues by fully discussing the parameters of them. The interwebz are forever so clarifying discussions now could help other owners later.

I have not had this issue yet. I also have not used this vehicle in an off road manner.
Thanx, but this is a classic boondoggle. It has zero bearing on the actual situation. It has no path forward and no possible resolution.

I own 47 vehicles this week. Dealers will try and deny service when they are shady, or even if you are an unknown client. Post those threads in the appropriate forums ( I will probably see them there)

Your input is noted, now I and hopefully others here are going to try and suss out the actual problem with this vehicle, not the 94 honda accord.
ignore what you want..good luck trying to get Kia to cover it...I have a feeling you won't get too far.
